I have very high expectations for Corps of Engineers campgrounds and I was very disappointed with Hazelton. The sites are very exposed with no shade to speak of. Sites are gravel and all appear to be pretty level, but they are basic sites and very close together.
The campground has few amenities beyond potable water and vault toilets. The toilets seemed clean, but the doors don’t lock. I did not see any staff at all during my stay, so I was unable to report the problem.
It felt like a very long drive south from I-94 and there does not seem to be anything nearby in terms of groceries or gas. Access to the Missouri River is limited to the boat ramp. Signs warn of crumbling cliffs, so it is difficult to even get close to the edge for a better view.
