Stay Safe in the Heat

Many areas are experiencing extreme heat. If you are planning to be outdoors this summer, here are seven tips to help do it safely.

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

  2. Avoid Peak Afternoon Heat: Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

  3. Dress Appropriately: Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing helps keep your body cool.

  4. Protect Against the Sun: Avoid harmful UV rays with hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen..

  5. Be Aware of the Symptoms Heat-Related Illness: These include heavy sweating (or no sweating at all), weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. If you experience these symptoms, seek shade and cool down immediately.

  6. Take Frequent Breaks: Seek shade or cool spots to to rest.

  7. Let Others Know Where You Will Be: Let someone know your itinerary, particularly if the area you are visiting has limited cell service.
