12 States Do Not Allow Overnight Camping in Rest Areas

The majority of these are eastern states. In the west, only South Dakota restricts stops so that resting overnight is not possible. All others allow at least an 8-hour stay. However, there are some states that don’t allow overnight stops on turnpikes or at Welcome Centers. This is good information to have, particularly if you are making a long drive.

Colorado and Georgia restrict overnight parking at Welcome Centers.

Kansas and Maine do not allow extended stays at Turnpike Travel Plazas.
